Because You Left/The Lie

Up until, now, we have had strong indications that time travel was going to be a big part of the answer to what is going on with the Island. However, we have not actually had physical time travel before this episode. All we have seen was Desmonds' consciousness bounce back and forth in time. That and a very old polar bear dug up in the Sahara. Things are definitely getting interesting.

The show started with the original Dharma people constructing the Orchid station (in the '70's), where we see Faraday in a construction uniform. Apparently, Faraday has been interested in time travel for quite some time. Do we read anything into the fact that he didn't look any younger? Or are we to assume that the beard is hiding his age?

I am a little confused about how we are to interpret the Islands 'Moving'. From the helicopter, the group escaping the Island clearly saw that the Island had moved. It was no longer there. We also learn the there is a time displacement that went with the move. However, from what I could see, it isn't the Island that is moving through time, but the people. So two things have happened; the people started moving through time and continue to do so at some interval (108 minutes, perhaps), and the Island moved through space, only once, as far as I can tell. Perhaps I am being too anal, but the scientist in me doesn't like that.

After the plane crash, when Ethan shot Locke, Locke must have made some impression on Ethan, because he knew his name. So after 812's crash, when Ethan infiltrated the survivors, why didn't Ethan recognize Locke?

It looks like Sawyer is beginning to take on a leadership role. I wonder how he likes that.

I am happy to see that Alpert is not all-knowing. He tells Locke that then next time he sees him, he will not know him. So Alpert is human. Could time travel be the reason he doesn't seem to age?

In order to stop the Island from bouncing around in time, they must bring everyone back. Does that include Desmond? Will Penny go with him? How about Ben? He supposedly can never return to the Island, and yet is sounded to me like he needs to return, too. If Penny returns with Desmond to the Island, and if Ben returns, will he try to kill her there? Also, I don't know if I believe that Locke is dead...

Anne is having trouble logging in, so for now, I am posting this for her:

1/19: Sorry, I haven't been around my computer for the last week. Thanks for posting your very astute observations. I'm wondering why Jack hasn't told Kate that he is Aaron's uncle??? The helicopter guy was picked up on the raft with the rest of the group.

As usual, I have mostly questions:

Was there any significance to there being a live baby, presumably born on the island, present at the time of the Dharma initiative?

Who were the guys (supposedly lawyers) who showed up at Kate's door. Were they from Ben trying to spook her into leaving? Or real lawyers, perhaps from Claire's mom?

Do we know why Sun flew to LA?

What did Ben take from behind the vent in the motel room?

Who was the woman in the butcher shop that Ben contacted?

We've heard the phrase "God help us all" from several people lately. What's up with that?

1/28: Oh yes, things are getting interesting!!

Good catch on Farriday's age. I didn't wonder that he looked the same then - nearly 40 years ago! Hmmm. I don't know what to make of that. It's apparent that Charlotte has been there before, right? Farriday is worried about her all through this episode and it ends with her bleeding from her nose. It appears she's the woman in a coma that Desmond visits in England. Another mystery to solve.

Why do you think it is only the people moving through time and not the island? The camp's no longer there, the Others camp is tents, not buildings; the Orchid is different. I'll be surprised (and amused) if the interval IS 108 minutes. You always are good with noticing that kind of detail, Roy. It doesn't seem to be that regular, but perhaps it is.

Can't answer your question about Locke and Ethan, as I don't remember the sequence.

Speaking of Sawyer, do you have any theories on what he whispered to Kate before jumping from the helicopter?

Yeah, I wondered about Ben's plans to return to the island, as I remembered he specifically told Locke whoever moves the island cannot return. I can't imagine Kate returning with Aaron after getting that message from Claire. Is she dead or not? So, you think Locke isn't dead? I guess it's entirely possible that dead people on the island can either return to life or at least manifest themselves, given Jack's father. But that means we might again meet up with Ethan, Keamy, Danielle, Alex and/or Charley.

Well, whatever, I'm looking forward to all future episodes.

Sorry, I don’t remember what live baby you are talking about.

I don’t think that the lawyers where Ben’s men. I believe that they really did want to determine Aaron’s parentage, to prove there were other survivors on the Island. I think that they where Widmore’s people.

Sun was in LA to join forces with Widmore to kill Ben. Why, do you suspect anything else?
Why is it apparent that Charlotte has been there before? I didn’t get a good look at her, but I didn’t think that the woman in a coma was Charlotte. There is a reason to suspect that, as Faraday was involved with her, and now he professes his love for Charlotte. But back at Oxford, Desmond found a picture with a woman (I assume the one in a coma). They looked like they were already involved. Now, on the Island, Charlotte is surprised by Faraday’s love. Also, until they got to the Island just recently, Charlotte was traipsing around the world, doing her job. And yet, the woman in a coma has been taken care of by her family for several years, ever since Faraday left Oxford. I suppose, with time travel, you could make it fit somehow, but I think it’s unlikely.

Why do I think the people are moving through time and the Island is not? You seemed to answer your own question. Because the camp is no longer there. The camp wasn’t built yet. And the camp is on the Island. If the Island went back in time, wouldn’t everything on the Island go with it, including the camp, the Others camp, the Orchid, in the same timeframe?

On further thought, I don’t think the interval is 108 minutes. Locke didn’t seem to know when the next change would be. And it did seem like a longer interval this last time.

What Sawyer whispered to Kate? Probably, to find his daughter, and giver her something. Remember how upset Jack was when Kate went to do an errand for Sawyer? Incidentally, that would be an interesting scene to see, because Kate and Sawyers babymomma have met before.

The reason I think that Locke is not dead, is because of the way Ben told the woman to take care of him. There seemed to be a lot of meaning in the way he said that, and she responded that she understood. It seems to me that he took some kind of drug to appear to be dead. Probably as a way to convince the Six to come back to the Island (I still don’t know why his death would do that, though). As for meeting up with dead people, we still may do that, considering all the time travel, but they have to be careful about changing the past.
